Introduction
Flexible Space Division
in Modern Commercial Interiors
Modern commercial interiors increasingly require flexible space division solutions that can adapt to changing occupancy patterns, event configurations and operational demands. Whether dividing a conference hall, separating a school hall into teaching spaces, or creating private meeting rooms within an open-plan office, the choice of partition system has a significant impact on acoustic performance, flexibility and long-term building value.
Two common approaches to flexible space division are movable acoustic wall systems and folding partition systems. While both provide the ability to divide and open spaces, they differ fundamentally in their acoustic performance, panel construction, operational characteristics and suitability for commercial applications.
This guide explains the key differences between movable acoustic walls and folding partitions, and provides a structured selection guide to help architects, designers and contractors identify the most appropriate ModernGlide system for each project.

What Are Movable
Acoustic Walls?
Movable acoustic walls — also known as operable walls or operable partition systems — are engineered partition systems designed to provide high acoustic performance while allowing spaces to open or divide as required. Unlike standard folding partitions, movable acoustic wall systems are purpose-built for demanding commercial environments where acoustic separation is a primary requirement.
Each panel within a movable acoustic wall system operates independently on a top-hung track system, sliding and stacking to a designated storage bay when the space is opened. When closed, automatic or manual drop seals engage to the floor and perimeter seals compress against walls and ceiling — creating a continuous acoustic barrier across the full opening.
The combination of heavy-duty panel construction, acoustic infill materials and engineered sealing systems allows movable acoustic walls to achieve sound reduction ratings from Rw 40 dB up to Rw 59 dB — comparable to a solid masonry wall at the highest performance levels.
Typical Features
- Independent sliding panels on top-hung track system
- Automatic or manual drop seals to floor
- Perimeter seals to walls and ceiling head track
- Acoustic infill panels with high mass construction
- Sound reduction ratings from Rw 40 dB to Rw 59 dB
- Panel depths typically 65 mm to 100 mm+
- Wide range of surface finishes and glazed options
- Solid, glazed and fully electric configurations available
Common Applications
Typical Features
- Panels connected together and fold as a linked set
- Lighter panel construction — typically 40–60 mm depth
- Basic compression seals at floor and perimeter
- Lower acoustic performance — typically Rw 25–35 dB
- Suitable for lighter applications with less acoustic demand
- Compact folding stack when open
- Lower cost than high-performance movable wall systems
- Limited finish options compared to acoustic systems

System Type 2
What Are
Folding Partitions?
Folding partitions are lighter partition systems where individual panels are connected together by hinges and fold as a linked set when the space is opened. Unlike movable acoustic wall systems where each panel operates independently, folding partitions move as a connected unit — the panels concertina together and stack to one or both sides of the opening.
Folding partition systems are typically constructed with thinner, lighter panels than movable acoustic wall systems. The reduced panel mass and simpler sealing arrangements mean that folding partitions generally provide lower acoustic performance — typically in the range of Rw 25–35 dB — making them more suitable for applications where acoustic separation is a secondary consideration.
For commercial projects where acoustic performance, system robustness and long-term reliability are important — such as conference centres, education buildings and corporate offices — a movable acoustic wall system will typically be the more appropriate specification choice.
Comparison
Key Differences Between
Movable Acoustic Walls & Folding Partitions
Understanding the fundamental differences between these two system types helps architects and specifiers select the most appropriate solution for each project.
Acoustic Performance
High acoustic performance — Rw ratings up to 59 dB with engineered sealing systems
Lower acoustic performance — typically Rw 25–35 dB with basic edge seals
Panel Operation
Independent sliding panels on top-hung tracks — each panel moves and stacks individually
Panels are hinged together and fold as a connected set — less flexible operation
System Robustness
Heavy-duty commercial-grade construction — engineered for daily operation in high-use environments
Lighter construction — suited to occasional use in lower-traffic applications
Acoustic Sealing
Automatic or manual drop seals to floor, perimeter seals to walls and ceiling — full acoustic closure
Basic compression seals — gaps at floor and perimeter limit acoustic performance
Commercial Suitability
Designed for demanding commercial environments — offices, conference centres, education buildings, hotels
Better suited to lighter applications where acoustic performance is less critical
Panel Thickness
Panel depths from 65 mm to 100 mm+ — greater mass contributes to higher acoustic performance
Thinner panels — typically 40–60 mm — lower mass limits sound insulation

Acoustic Performance
in Commercial Spaces
Acoustic performance is a fundamental requirement in meeting rooms, conference centres and education environments. The ability to hold confidential discussions, run simultaneous events in adjacent spaces, or meet regulatory acoustic standards depends entirely on the sound reduction performance of the partition system specified.
Movable acoustic wall systems provide significantly higher sound reduction compared with basic folding partitions. While a folding partition may achieve Rw 25–35 dB — sufficient to provide a visual division but allowing speech to be clearly audible through the partition — a high-performance movable acoustic wall such as the MG100 achieves up to Rw 59 dB, providing confidential-grade acoustic separation comparable to a solid masonry wall.
For architects specifying systems for conference centres, education buildings or corporate environments, the acoustic performance difference between movable acoustic walls and folding partitions is substantial — and is a critical factor in system selection for any acoustically sensitive application.
